Job Title:  Caretaker
Salary: £6,736 - £6,843 per annum
Hours: 10 hours per week, term time only plus 30 hours in holidays to be agreed.  Monday - Friday 7.00-8.00 a.m. & 5.00-6.00 p.m.

Blakedown CE Primary School is looking to recruit a committed and trustworthy part time caretaker, responsible for carrying out a range of duties which contributes to the maintenance, repair, security and general upkeep of the school site. 

This role would ideally suit an individual with experience of and aptitude for general DIY, general maintenance and repair, such as a knowledge of basic plumbing, basic painting, basic electrical work, grounds maintenance and basic carpentry.


Typical responsibilities would include:

Site Security & Safety

  • Open and lock up the school premises each day
  • Act as a keyholder, responding to alarm callouts
  • Carry out regular checks to ensure the site is safe, secure and hazard-free

Maintenance & Repairs

  • General maintenance and repairs around the school site
  • Monitor the condition of the building and site, reporting issues as needed
  • Liaise with contractors and check completed work
  • Ensure heating and hot water systems operate effectively
  • Carry out statutory fire and water safety checks

Grounds & External Areas

  • Keep paths and play areas clean and safe (e.g. clear litter, manage snow/flood access, winter gritting)
  • Check drains and gutters regularly
  • Basic garden maintenance

Logistics & Support

  • Receive and manage deliveries and stock
  • Move furniture/equipment as needed
  • Support school lettings and events outside normal hours

We are looking for someone who:

  • Is reliable, honest and organised
  • Has good practical maintenance and DIY skills
  • Takes pride in maintaining high standards
  • Can work independently and use initiative
  • Understands the importance of safeguarding and health & safety
  • Is confident with practical tasks, tools and minor repairs
  • Has good organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Brings a friendly, can-do attitude to their work
  • Experience in a similar role is helpful but not essential

You will also need to:
 •    Understand basic health & safety and COSHH guidance (or be willing to learn)
 •    Be physically fit and able to carry out a variety of tasks
 •    Show commitment to safeguarding children and young people


The working pattern would usually involve approximately 2 hours a day, split across morning and evening duties.  There can be flexible working arrangements regarding the additional 30 hours during holidays.

Disclosure Barring Service (DBS)
This post is exempt under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of criminal records via the Disclosure and Barring Service before the appointment is confirmed.
